"ARTICHOKE PROJECT" [AN URBAN CONSTELLATION]
Like the vegetable the name references, this project is focused on "peeling back" layers, both literally and symbolically. This site-specific installation presents common elements found within a boutique and reconstructs them into a spatial rhythm. It explores the dialogue between abandoned space, architectural gesture and the human form. By fusing various mediums, a unique narrative unfolds to engage both immediate and remote audiences.
The projects exists in 2 major components:
1. Within the vacant storefront, a parasitic structure composed of thousands of feet of wood lath pieces twists through the space and out into the street. This lath system then interacts with several internally-illuminated dress forms that have been assembled into an subtly-connected topography.
2. Throughout the neighborhood, five independent retail spaces were provided with one of the same internally illuminated dress forms to create a wearable art piece utilizing scrap material from their business. These independent window displays then relate back into the central part of this mapped "constellation".
This eco-friendly project, composed almost entirely of found objects, re-purposes these artifacts to represent change and evolution. Lath (normally covered by drywall) and dress forms (normally covered in fabric) are peeled back to transform from their typical orderly fashion into a dynamic composition. Then, by uncovering the inter-relations between independent business and we who depend on them, "The ARTichoke Project" interprets ways in which commerce can be shaped in the future.
